Cotton is a wonderful fiber - soft and comfortable next to the skin. Being porous, it absorbs moisture and allows air to circulate to the skin to keep it healthy. It not only, lets in air, but also lets out the ammonia that is formed in the bacterial breakdown of urine. Cotton even has the property of tending to bind - in, rather than release any toxins in its vicinity. This must account for its long and honorable history of use as bandaging material over open wounds. Nothing developed over the recent years does the job better.

Most other disposable diapers add artificial chemical absorbents, such as acrylic acid polymer salts, to their all wood pulp padding in order to increase absorbency. These granules, which are inside the absorbent padding of the diaper, turn into gel when they come in contact with moisture. This gel can end up on your baby.

Try this; cut open the padding of a tushies diaper, and you'll find a natural blend cotton fluff. Granule - free! Open the padding of the leading disposable diapers, and you can shake out white granules. Put them in water and watch them turn to gel.

Gel diapers hold an absolutely outrageous amount of urine for a crawling baby or toddler to have to carry around just a few millimeters from their skin. Try pouring water on a gel disposable until it reaches saturation. Would you really like to carry around that amount of urine in your diaper? The super absorbency of gel diapers stems from the diapers remarkable ability to absorb and hold fluid. The diaper in itself may initiate a powerful absorption process after the skin becomes wet. This absorption process may be so powerful as to cause the skin to actually shrivel and interstitial fluid to be absorbed. An additional risk is posed as the normal defences of the skin may be compromised by this powerful absorption process.

Another problem with gel disposables is that it is difficult to distinguish whether they are wet or dry. This means that many babies remain in wet diapers too long. This has made irritation due to non breathability of disposables into a much bigger problem than it appears to be in laboratory studies. The "five times more likely" figure is no doubt considerably higher in the general population where conditions are less controlled.

The fact that chemical absorbent disposables do not breathe well raises a baby's skin temperature by a significant amount. One study claims four degrees. This is a potential source of irritation. When the heat combines with wetness, on or near the skin, and with the bacteria breakdown of urine, the risk of skin infection increases (diaper rash).

Another area of concern with artificial, chemical absorbent disposables is that the various plastics, chemicals, paper bleaching agents, synthetic perfumes, fire retardants, and other substances used in the very complex manufacture of gel disposables, can cause reaction in babies. The diaper area is a sensitive one, as well as one of high absorbency. It makes sense to keep chemicals from this area to prevent skin irritation, and chemical absorption into the skin, and thus into the blood stream from occuring.

Disposable diapers serve a need in our high - speed culture, but you do have an alternative to having chemicals and absorbents on and in your baby. You can use a gel-free, chemical - free, natural blend cotton, absorbent disposable diaper - Tushies.
