It picks up stations that even the stereo system in my house has trouble with, something that is really unusual for a portable radio. The sound is quite clear as well, with distortion only toward the highest volume.

The Freeplay EyeMax LED Radio

"The radio that plays anytime/anywhere"

This is one neat little radiolight. You may be wondering what on earth a radiolight is, well it's the "EyeMax Radio". It's more than just any normal, hand crank, solar radio. You see it has a LED bulb in one end so you can use it like a flashlight. You never have to listen to the radio in the dark again unless you like to do that kind of thing.

Lets talk more about how to charge the Eye Max. You can just set it in the sun while you listen, or leave it in the sun turned off to get a quicker charge on the internal NI-MH batteries. If it's dark or cloudy, you can use the included AC adapter. What did you say? What if the electricity is out, or you are camping miles away from a power outlet? You are in luck there too, because you can use the Eye Max's hand crank. It even has a green LED charging light that lights up when you are cranking at the optimum charging speed.

Here are some wind versus play times:
30 sec of winding = 35 min. at normal volume
30 sec = 25 min. at high volume
1 min. = up to 75 min.
2 min. = up to 140 min.
30 sec = 1 hour of LED light
24 hours of charging with the AC adapter, or 40 min. of cranking will give you a full charge = up to 25 hours normal volume.

Freeplay's unique power generation technology harnesses your own energy, then transforms it into an electrical current to power this radio. You simply turn a crank, and the energy is stored in a constant force steel spring. As the spring unwinds it operates a transmission, which powers an internal generator providing free power for your radio. Just wind the GSW Plus for 30 to 60 seconds, and you can enjoy your favorite AM/FM or SW radio programming for up to 1 hour. Set it in the sun, and its solar panel will provide power all day. As the sunlight begans to fade, the radio will automatically start to draw from its internal battery to maintain power. The Global Shortwave Plus' internal battery allows it to store all extra solar and spring energy.

The Freeplay plus provides you with a sure source of communication, and it is environmentally friendly as well. The winding mechanism is rated for up to 10,000 hours of playing time!!! You never have to throw away another battery, or worry about being close to an electrical outlet! Two shortwave radio bands allow you to pick up stations in the 3-18 Mhz frequency range. So whether you want to hear what's going on around the world, or tune into your favorite local station, this radio has what you need. It also incorporates a fine tuning knob allowing you to receive single side band transmissions. This is important to let you tune into some emergency agency broadcasts. For increased range we recommend an SW antenna - see below.

The plus in the name stands for the included 3 white LED light that is attached to the side of the FreePlay Plus. The light can be extended up to 6 feet from the radio and attached to metal surfaces via its magnetic base. The 3 LEDs provide the low level light you need to operate the radio, or do other close tasks in dark conditions. The attached light is an ingenious feature for times when the power is out, or you are away from a light source; as trying to operate a radio in the dark is frustrating. The Freeplay Plus has everything you need at your fingertips. The Freeplay Plus is the ultimate product for audio and illumination dependability. Shortwave Antennas

We highly recommend a shortwave antenna to give you the best clarity, and increased range when using your radio to pick up SW signals. These portable Antennas easily clip onto the built-in telescoping antenna on most shortwave radios.

Freeplay Summit

The Freeplay Summit radio offers reliable access to music and global information whenever and wherever you need it. The Summit is the lightest weight, most compact of the the Freeplay Shortwave radios. The Freeplay Summit offers you the choice of 3 power options:

Wind up: The Freeplay direct drive system in the Summit consists of a simple gearing transmission which drives the AC alternator, providing power to the internal battery. You cannot over wind the unit as the energy simply recharges the battery. The winder handle can be cranked in both directions. Forty minutes of cranking using the optimum charge level indicator will fully charge the battery. The charge indicator light will only illuminate when you are winding the handle at the ideal speed. The generator will still charge at lower speeds, however, it is less efficient, consequently it will take longer to generate the same amount of energy. A fully charged Freeplay Summit will play for approximately 20 hours. A 30 second wind will provide about 30 minutes of normal volume playtime. Playtimes will vary with the volume setting.
Solar: It will take approximately 40 hours to fully charge the Freeplay Summit radio's internal battery using its high performance amorphous, thin film solar panel. The solar panel must be in direct sunlight to power the radio. Charging can be done even when the radio is switched off.
AC Power: The Freeplay Summit comes with a 6V 100MA AC adapter. It will take approximately 24 hours to fully charge the internal battery using the wall adapter. The Freeplay Summit rechargable battery is a removable Nickle Metal Hydride pack. For best results, the internal battery requires a 24 conditioning charge prior to use. The radio can, however, be used immediately in the wind-up mode if required.

The Freeplay Summit has digital tuning which is a plus, as it is easier to use, especially for beginners. You can pick the precise station on the dial with no quessing required. You get 30 station memories: 10 FM, 10 MW (AM), 5 SW and 5 LW. The Summits frequencie's include:

MW 540-1650 KHZ
SW 5.95-15.6 MHZ
LW 146-281 KHZ

Additional features of the Summit include a clock, an alarm, an earphone socket for personal listening, a lock function which locks the buttons so you don't accidently turn the radio on, and low voltage cut off to prevent the battery from being drained which protects your memory settings. The small size, special features, and adjustable AM frequency separation make the Summit shortwave radio the perfect traveling campanion at home or abroad.
