C. Crane's Quick Battery Charger

Smart Charger from C. Crane C. Crane's Quick Charger is just what you need to keep your rechargable cells in peak condition, and ensure their long lifetimes. The Quick Charger quickly tests, conditions, and recharges the most common sizes of nickel-cadmium (NICD) and nickel-metal hydride (NIMH) cells.

C. Crane's Quickchargers are designed with several technical features to meet your battery recharging needs. With these battery chargers, each of your cells are charged in parallel to the same level, unlike most chargers which charge two or more cells in series. Parallel charging leads to better performance and longer life, by charging each cell to the same level as opposed to one or more cells always being either undercharged or overcharged.

The Quick Charger's unique microprocessor controlled system provides several benefits. It can evaluate the condition of older cells, exercize NICDs and rid them of the memory effect caused by shallow cycling.

C. Crane's Quickcharger comes with an operating manual. It uses a 120 VAC wall cube power supply, but can also be powered from 12 VDC.

C. Crane Quick Charger The quick Charger is simple to use. You simply plug it in which gets the microprcessor going. Lifting the plastic lid signals the microprnocesser that cells are being added to the charger. There are 4 charging stations which hold either AAA, AA, C or D sized cells. In each particular charging run all the cells must be the same size. You can run 1 to 4 batteries at a time. Good electrical contact is assured with strong springs. Just closing the lid initiates a charging cycle. You couldn't ask for easier operation on your part, and at this point the microproscessor takes over for you. It determines the state of charge of your cells and decides if they need a discharge cycle before being recharged. It most cases batteries are not fully discharged when you take them out of your flashlights, remotes, radios, cameras, etc. The Quick Charger completely drains and reconditons the cells before every recharge to prevent the memory effect that reduces battery life. It discharges cells in parallel to prevent any of the cells from being overdischarged and reverse polarized, as often happens when cells are discharged in series, leading to greatly reduced cell capacity and premature failure. The Quick Charger takes the cells down to 1.0 VDC and then stops discharging.

Recharging then begans with four stages: soft start charging, fast charging, top off charging, and finally trickle charging.

  1. Soft start charging reduces cell heating by controlling the amount of current flowing into a totally discharged cell.
  2. Fast charging uses negative pulse charging to condition the chemistry for maximum charge cycles and capacity. It recharges the cell as quickly as possible until it is almost fully charged.
  3. Top-off charging finishes charging at a reduced current rate to prevent overcharging.
  4. The fully charged cells can then be left in the charger to trickle charge until you are ready for them. No need to immediately remove the batteries when they are completely charged. They will not overcharge, but remain at peak.
These 4 steps are designed to recharge your batteries without producing damaging heat to shorten your batteries' life.

An LCD display tells you where in the recharge cycle your batteries are. It has a voltmeter which displays cell voltage. The LCD display also signals the user when charging is finished. C. Crane's Quick Charger recharges 4 "AA" high capacity batteries in less than five hours.

NICDs and NIMH batteries were a great step above disposable cells providing real money savings. Now C. Crane's Quick Charger takes you a step higher in savings by restoring lost capacity to older cells and prolonging your batteries' productive lives.

C. Crane's QuickCharger is the best battery recharger I've ever used. It is simple to use, effective, and protects cells from damage inflicted by most commercial chargers. At only US$49.95, it is worth much more than it costs. Considering the hundreds of dollars that most folks have invested in rechargable cells, this is a small price to pay for keeping them in peak condition, ensuring their long lifetimes.

The QuickCharger is the only model we tested that completely recharged the most capacious battery, MAHAcell's 8,000-milliampere-hour NiMH, size D.
